Periodontist,
I imagine that you are aware of the ongoing problem of the
non-diagnosis of periodontal diseases. It is a ubiquitous problem that is
detrimental to the dental and apparently medical health of everyone who is not
diagnosed appropriately. There is mounting evidence that periodontitis is a
major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, possibly pre-term low birth
weight babies and the regulation of blood glucose in diabetics. Considering
these medical ramifications, one realizes that the detection of periodontal
diseases is beginning to assume an importance similar to the detection of
hypertension and elevations in blood cholesterol and glucose levels, just to
name a few indicators of medical risks. The dental ramifications are extremely
well known to all of us.
Periodontists have a tremendous armamentarium
at their disposal to treat periodontal diseases. We have the ability to perform
a variety of non-surgical and conservative treatments plus a plethora of
surgical procedures including the regeneration of hard and soft tissues and the
placement dental implants. The problem is that our abilities become irrelevant
without the diagnosis of periodontal diseases, which remains an ongoing
problem.
The Mission
of PerioWise is in concert with that of the AAP. Namely, to advance the
periodontal health of the public. I am hopeful that after you review the
information on this web site you will have a new and better way to help educate
dental professionals and the public about periodontal diseases. The evidence,
based on clinical studies, shows that PerioWise probes are superior in many
